Umber is a pigment. Clay, iron, a little manganese, dug out of the earth — one of the first colours human beings ever used.
Its name means shadow.
And here is the lovely part: it became the colour the great painters reached for when they wanted light. Stand in front of a Rembrandt and the glow seems to come from somewhere inside the canvas. That isn't bright paint. It's shadow, laid down first, so the light has somewhere to land.
Take the umber away and the glow goes with it.
Which is why we named the app after it. In painting, umber is the ground — the layer that goes down first so that everything above it can shine.
Umber does the same for you. It finds your season, and the colours that make you feel most like yourself.
